Grey’s Anatomy‘s Halloween episode surprised fans with a touching scene remembering the late Derek Shepherd.

In season 16 episode 6 ‘Whistlin’ Past the Graveyard’, Meredith and Derek’s daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) hits out at DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) after DeLuca offers to help with her butterfly wings. “You’re not my dad,” she tells him.

It’s not until much later on when DeLuca understands why Zola reacted strongly – Derek used to fix her butterfly wings before he died, and she is concerned that she will forget him.

“Zola, you’re not going to forget your dad,” DeLuca responds. “No-one’s forgetting your dad. He was a legend.”

DeLuca then tells Zola about the time Derek performed surgery on a patient named Isaac, who had an inoperable tumour on his spinal cord, and saved the man’s life – a storyline from a season 6 episode.

That’s not the first time Grey’s Anatomy has given a mention to a former main character. A couple of weeks ago, Meredith received a text from Cristina Yang, who was played by Sandra Oh during the first 10 seasons of the show.

Patrick Dempsey played Derek between 2005 and 2015 before the character was dramatically killed off after a car accident.
