Coronation Street fans spot ‘confirmation’ of DI Costello’s ‘downfall’ in major twist
Those who follow the ITV soap are convinced that the character is hiding something
Coronation Street fans think they have spotted ‘confirmation’ of DI Costello’s ‘downfall’ as part of a major twist in the long-running show.
Those who follow the ITV soap are convinced that the character is hiding something and are keen to find out more about the mysterious head of CID within Weatherfield Police.
This is because DI Costello, played by Daon Broni, has been closely involved in Lisa Swain’s recent storylines, which saw her struggle with her past, before it came back to haunt her.
Corrie fans will recall that Costello pushed Lisa into having therapy sessions after the death of her colleague, PC Craig Tinker, triggered memories of the loss of her own wife, Becky Swain, in the line of duty.
Fans first heard about Becky last year when Lisa opened up to Carla Connor about her late wife as the pressures of being a detective sergeant on the Lauren Bolton and Joel Deering case and being a mum to teenage daughter, Betsy, got on top of her.
Since then, Corrie viewers have watched Lisa and Carla fall for one another and after moving into their first home together, No.6 Coronation Street, earlier this year, the pair recently got engaged.
But in a shock twist last month, Becky arrived in Weatherfield – alive and well. Lisa’s jaw was on the floor to see Becky, alive and well, opposite her in her new home with new fiancée Carla, with the arrival coming on their daughter Betsy’s, 18th birthday.
An emotional Lisa questioned her former partner, who said she had been in Spain under another name having been put into witness protection, following an undercover operation gone wrong, before she confronted Costello, who confirmed Becky’s version of events.
It was then, at the end of last weekend, that Costello’s sneaky behaviour continued as he was seen watching Kit in conversation with Carla, who rocked up at the police station before he ended up offering him a promotion.
It was during their later chat that Corrie fans seemingly spotted a clue that could seal Costello’s downfall as part of the first-ever Corrie and Emmerdale crossover, which has begun filming and airs in January.
Eagle-eyed viewers spotted a newspaper pinned to a board behind Costello, which came with the headline “Police Arrest Gang Members…”
With Corrie fans convinced Costello is a bent cop, it quickly got fans thinking ahead to upcoming scenes. Alongside screengrabs from the scenes, @HeyItsCallisto said: “Oh?” @wildeagle85 replied: “I saw that! I thought to myself…. hmm.” @justwlwthings suggested: “This was no coincidence.”
And with a County Lines operation ongoing in Emmerdale, Corrie fans think the two will end up being linked. @eternitydropped shared: “These two [Celia and Costello] could definitely be mum& son. Becky was always in debt, but was it actually gang debt she passed off as something else?
“Did she get out by blackmailing Costello? Getting him to help fake her death in payment for keeping quiet about county lines.. #Corrie #Emmerdale.”
@DevskiTweets added: “I really believe that the Corriedale crossover is gonna link the Becky/Costello/Swarla storyline in Coronation Street to the drug gang in Emmerdale #Corrie #emmerdale #corriedale.”
