A Beloved Character Could Be Back on the Cobbles

In an emotional revelation, Coronation Street icon Sherrie Hewson has shared her wish to return to the ITV soap as Maureen Webster, decades after she last graced the famous cobbles. The news comes hot on the heels of her shocking on-screen death in Hollyoaks, where her character Martha Blake was brutally murdered in a devastating twist.

Fans are already buzzing at the thought of Maureen’s comeback, nearly twenty years after she bid farewell to Weatherfield.Kym Marsh hits out at Sherrie Hewson's Corrie 'change' claims: 'Don't get the luxury!' | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV | Express.co.uk

Remembering Maureen Webster

Sherrie first joined Coronation Street in 1993 as Maureen Grimes, daughter of the sharp-tongued Maud Grimes, played by Elizabeth Bradley. Maureen was a down-to-earth divorcee who found herself juggling work, family, and romance in true Weatherfield style.

She famously reunited with her former sweetheart Reg Holdsworth, portrayed by Ken Morley, after landing a job at Bettabuy supermarket. Despite Maud’s disapproval, Maureen and Reg rekindled their relationship and eventually tied the knot. Reg later bought the corner shop for them to run together, cementing Maureen’s place as one of the street’s most familiar faces through the mid-90s.

Their marriage crumbled when Reg’s wandering eye led to an affair and a secret child, prompting Maureen to divorce him and rename the shop Maureen’s Mini Market.Sherrie Hewson eyes up Coronation Street return after 'horrific' Hollyoaks exit - OK! Magazine

Love, Heartbreak, and a Return That Fans Still Remember

Maureen’s romantic life remained turbulent. After a brief relationship with Bill Webster (Peter Armitage), she rebounded by marrying Fred Elliott (John Savident), only to realise she still loved Bill. In classic Corrie fashion, she fled to Germany to be with him, and the two eventually married there.

Her last appearance came in 2006 during a surprise Christmas visit, where she caught Bill entangled in an affair with Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls). Sherrie’s Shocking Exit from Hollyoaks

The timing of Sherrie’s comments comes just days after her Hollyoaks character, Martha Blake, met a gruesome end. In jaw-dropping scenes, Martha was stabbed by her own son, Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield), after he turned on her in a moment of rage and betrayal.

Speaking about the dramatic scenes, Sherrie admitted, “It’s quite spectacular, unexpected, and horrific more than anything else.”

“I’d Like to Go Back to Corrie”

Now free from her Hollyoaks role, the actress is openly calling for a Coronation Street return. “I’d like to go back to Corrie,” she told Reach PLC. “My mate Tony Maudsley from Benidorm is in it, who I speak to most days. I don’t think I’d be connected to him, but I am Sally’s ex mother-in-law. I married Billy Webster, and she was married to Kevin Webster, so I’ve got a connection there.”

Given that Maureen’s son-in-law Kevin is still a central figure on the cobbles, the door for her return is wide open.

Could Maureen Webster Walk Weatherfield Again?

While ITV has yet to confirm any official plans, Sherrie’s enthusiasm has reignited fan hopes. Her combination of humor, warmth, and classic Corrie chaos would be a welcome addition to the street’s ever-evolving drama.

For now, one thing is certain: viewers would be thrilled to see Maureen Webster walk back into Weatherfield and stir things up once again.
