A relevant and shocking storyline plays out over the coming days in Emmerdale, as Clemmie Reed (Mabel Addison) suffers the consequences of sending an image of herself to Carl Holliday (Charlie Munro Joyce).

‘Essentially she’s confused about getting attention and wanting validation from boys,’ Olivia Bromley, who plays Clemmie’s adoptive mother Dawn Taylor, told us. ‘I don’t think she actually has the understanding to know how serious the situation is and the consequences of what she’s done.’

After sending the image to Carl, he soon receives a visit from the police after forwarding the image to other people.

Carl finds himself in deep trouble, accused of sending an indecent image of a minor. For Clemmie it’s total humiliation as she realises the image has been seen by so many people.

Clemmie admits to Dawn why she sent the picture to Carl, and for Dawn it triggers a lot of feelings from when she was younger.

‘Her past is quite a dark and complicated and traumatic one, particularly with her relationship towards men, her relationship to her own self esteem and the validation she used to get from working as a sex worker to survive,’ Olivia explained. ‘Her relationship with sex, power, money, abuse, addiction is incredibly complicated.’

As Dawn tries to talk to Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) about Carl sharing the photo of Clemmie, Nicola’s tendency to lash out and blame everybody else sees her attacking Dawn and bringing up her past as a reason for Clemmie not having any boundaries.

This leads to Dawn reflecting on whether she really was to blame, as Olivia told us.

‘There’s a really interesting dynamic of Dawn saving this little girl and in a way trying to save herself as well. She sees so much of this little child, this little girl, as her opportunity to do things right and make amends and be a good mother and make sure the patterns don’t repeat.

‘Then she just sees the patterns repeat right in front of her eyes. For Dawn I think it puts her in a very difficult headspace.’

The issue puts the Tates and the Kings at war as battle lines are drawn over whether Clemmie or Carl – or their parents – were to blame. Dawn opens up to Joe (Ned Porteous) about her past, and how she met Clemmie’s mum on the streets.

She insists that her priority is protecting her daughter from the kind of pressures that her mum and she faced, but has to acknowledge that it could already be too late.

‘There’s a scene where Dawn gave Clemmie a phone because all her friends were having one, and Billy (Jay Kontzle) said, “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”’ Olivia recalled.

‘Dawn said, “Of course, why not?” Because she wants that child to be socially accepted and it’s the normal thing to do and she wants to keep in touch with her and contactable, she can’t be the odd one out. She trusts that it’ll be fine – what’s the worst that could happen?

‘And then very quickly she realises it was a huge mistake because she had no idea of the capacity of how far it could go wrong.’
