What does ping mean? Coronation Street secret joke explained as David left confused
Coronation Street fans have deciphered the meaning of ‘ping’ after David Platt was ‘pinged’ by newcomer Ben Driscoll.
Last week, Ben (played by Aaron McCusker) made his first appearance on the ITV soap, arriving with former resident Eva Price (portrayed by Catherine Tyldesley) after surprising her with the purchase of the Rovers Return.
The pair quickly settled into the pub and threw a massive Halloween party for all the regulars. However, David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd), no stranger to neighbourhood disputes, ended up in a clash with rugby player Ben.
Looking to stir up some mischief, David sneaked into the back of the Rovers and swiped Ben’s cherished rugby ball before heading out to the bar to toss it around, reports the Daily Star.
Just as David was about to throw it, Ben approached and ‘pinged’ David, tapping his forehead and exclaiming: “Ping!” Fellow pub-goers were left laughing uproariously as a confused David looked around asking: “Ping? Ping? ! What’s Ping? !”.
To tease David further, nobody enlightened him, and it was evident that it was still bothering him days after the Halloween party had concluded. So much so, he returned to the Rovers to question Ben and Eva about it.
“That thing that you did in here, the pointing thing,” David said, before Eva clarified: “Oh you mean when he pinged you!” She added with a mischievous grin: “Just means he likes you!”.
David, clearly unimpressed, retorted: “What putting his finger on my forehead in front of all my friends and neighbours.” The situation escalated when David nicked Ben’s rugby shirt as a form of retaliation, leaving Ben seething.
Moreover, the ‘ping’ joke certainly stirred up a storm among viewers, with many left scratching their heads over its meaning. However, some fans are convinced they’ve cracked the ‘real meaning’ behind the joke.
On a Corrie Facebook fan forum, one viewer speculated it might be a rugby reference. They posted: “Tried to look it up and AI (so trust that or not as you like) said that the term ping in rugby is slang for being penalised by the referee for an infringement of the rules. So if that’s right at least it makes sense in context but it is a bit obscure.”
Yet another viewer pointed out: “It’s not deep, he was basically just flicking him away like he’s a small inconvenience, making him look a bit daft in front of everyone.”
A third added: “It was also a way to distract him to get his ball back.” Another also pondered: “I think he was just being funny.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
