Michelle Keegan dealt blow as BBC axes drama after two series
The BBC has axed period drama Ten Pound Poms, which starred Michelle Keegan, after just two series despite the fact that the second run ended on a cliffhanger.
Michelle Keegan has been hit with disappointing news from the BBC, as it’s been announced that Ten Pound Poms will not be returning for a third series.
The historical drama, which told the journey of British citizens emigrating to Australia in the 1950s, has been axed by the BBC after just two seasons.
The BBC series attracted an impressive 6.37 million viewers when it first hit screens back in May 2023, but by the conclusion of the second season this April the audience had dwindled to just 3.15 million.
However, a BBC spokesperson told The Sun: “It’s been a joy to bring the story of the Ten Pound Poms to life for BBC viewers and we are really grateful to Danny Brocklehurst, Eleven and all the cast and crew who have worked on the series.”
The final episode of the second series saw Michelle’s character, nurse Kate Thorne, determined to continue her fight to regain custody of her son Michael from his adoptive parents, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
Michelle had previously expressed her eagerness to return for another series, although she acknowledged it was unlikely to happen soon due to her pregnancy with daughter Palma, now six months old.
She stated: “I love this show and there’s definitely more of Kate’s story to be explored. But – for very obvious reasons in my case [her pregnancy] there may be a delay before I would be available to do it.”
Faye Marsay, who portrayed Kate’s mate Annie Roberts, commented at the time: “I think, like Michelle said, we’ve got to wait and see what the appetite is for it and whether it resonates with people, only if it’s successful enough will we get a series three.”
However, Michelle has already been confirmed as returning to ITV, more than 17 years since she first appeared on the channel playing Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street.
She’s set to feature in a “gripping” new drama following her Netflix triumph last year. Michelle will take on the role of DI Emma Crane in fresh ITV crime series, In The Blame.
Her character will probe the death of a teenage figure skater, appearing alongside Douglas Booth as DI Tom Radley.
The synopsis hints: “What starts as a tragic death in the quiet town of Wakestead, spirals into a tangled web of lies, institutional cover-ups, and moral compromise as DI Crane (Keegan) and DI Radley (Booth) dig deeper”.
Created by Quay Street Productions, the six-episode drama, which has been adapted from Charlotte Langley’s first novel, will commence shooting this summer across London.
Lead writer and executive producer Megan Gallagher commented: “The Blame is such an important and urgent story to tell; I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring Charlotte Langley’s world and characters to life on screen.”
The Ten Pound Poms update also arrives just weeks following Michelle’s farewell to Brassic, which is concluding after seven years. In a chat with the Daily Star, Michelle expressed: “It’s really sad. I love this show, and for me it’s felt like home.
“Every year, I’d go off and do other projects, and then I’d come back home to Brassic as it was always at the same time every year. It was the nicest job to do because it was like seeing all your mates again.”

Michelle, who portrays Erin Croft in the Sky series, mentioned that the end of Brassic would “hit [her] more” once the seventh and final series is fully aired, and she no longer has the opportunity to work on the programme.
She further added: “It’s going to hit me more this year when it’s not coming back.”
